Bobby rebounded from early adversity Thursday night at Eldora (OH) Speedway, racing from seventh to victory in the $30,000 Dream preliminary feature.
After battling motor issues during Wednesday night’s program, the team was forced to change engines before returning to competition Thursday. The hard work paid off as Bobby charged to victory in the 50-lap feature.
“It’s a great relief,” Bobby said. “We worked hard last night getting the motor changed. It wasn’t really what I wanted for early in the night, but for that racetrack, it was perfect. Thanks to my crew for their hard work.”
Starting seventh, Bobby quickly moved forward and settled into fifth during the opening laps. He slid into fourth with 40 laps remaining and grabbed third one lap later before a caution regrouped the field.
With 30 laps to go, Bobby made an aggressive move in turn four to take over second and set his sights on the leader. Heavy lapped traffic shuffled him back to fourth a few laps later, but he regrouped and continued charging.
Bobby reclaimed third with 25 laps remaining and moved back into second down the backstretch with 21 laps to go. One lap later, he completed the winning pass in turn four to take command of the race.
A caution with 17 laps remaining brought the field back to his rear bumper, but Bobby maintained the lead through the restart and gradually began to pull away.
The race tightened again in the closing laps as lapped traffic allowed the runner-up to erase much of the deficit. With five laps remaining, the battle for the lead intensified as the two raced side-by-side while navigating slower traffic.
Bobby delivered when it mattered most.
Threading his way through traffic, Bobby slid in front of a lapped car at a critical moment, creating just enough separation to secure the victory by 0.8 seconds.
“It was very easy tonight to get sucked into the concrete,” Bobby said. “I pushed several times. I don’t know what it was about turn three. Normally I can sail around there, but tonight I was having some difficulties with it. Kind of turn one and two as well.”
Despite the win, Bobby knows there is still room for improvement heading into the remainder of the Dream weekend.
“We need to get our car a little bit more than one dimensional,” he said. “Get off the top and get it more in the middle. I did feel pretty good on the bottom too. I made some passes down there. I think I’m just the fastest on top. One hundred laps here, it’s hard to do that once you lose your downforce with the spoiler. We’ll give it our best.”
The victory provided a strong bounce-back after Wednesday’s mechanical issues and gave Bobby valuable momentum heading into Saturday’s Dream finale.
