Bobby added another big check to the haul on Saturday night, claiming a hard-fought victory in the Illinois Valley Showdown at LaSalle (IL) Speedway. The MARS-sanctioned event paid $25,000 to win, and Bobby earned every dollar of it by leading the final 64 laps while navigating intense lapped traffic and a treacherous cushion.
After starting second in the 75-lap feature, Bobby slipped back to third early while working the low side. But once the leaders hit lapped traffic with 66 to go, he made his move to the front and took the lead on lap 11 when the leader jumped the cushion.
From there, the “Smooth Operator” put on a masterclass in traffic management, slicing his way through heavy backmarkers. A caution with 10 laps remaining set up a high-stakes dash to the finish, but Bobby tiptoed the cushion to perfection, holding off the challengers and crossing the line 2.3 seconds ahead.
“What an awesome race. I was definitely a bit worried there at the end,” Bobby said in victory lane. “I knew my dad was going crazy back there with the sticks top to bottom. I was doing my best to just maintain the lead, not make any mistakes, but still try to drive hard. That’s a fun thing about dirt racing — the leader is trying not to mess up while the guy in second is throwing everything he’s got at you. Luckily, we held on and I’ve got to thank my guys for all their efforts this weekend. It’s been a lot of fun.”
