Late-Race Spin Thwarts Knoxville Nationals Rally

knoxville sep14It's always exciting when Bobby has to rally from the back. Just as he did in the Dirt Million, Bobby charged from his 22nd starting position to the lead only to fall just short at the finish. Moving quickly through the field, he was inside the top ten by lap 30. At the halfway point of the 100-lap crown jewel race he was in second hounding the race leader for the top spot. A treacherous cushion hindered Bobby's momentum which allowed Sheppard and Bloomquist to join the battle. Finally breaking free with 25 laps to go, Bobby turned up the wick and closed the gap between himself and race leader Owens. He caught the leader with 20 laps to go and briefly shot into the lead with a slider but he jumped the cushion allowing Owens to reclaim the point. O'Neal got by for second and with 12 laps to go O'Neal checked up exiting turn four as Bobby was following close behind him. They touched and Bobby spun. Having to restart outside the top ten, Bobby was able to come back to seventh at the checkers. "More experience here is what I needed," Bobby said. "We’ll get em next time. I wanna start 22nd everywhere," Bobby joked. -- Heath Lawson Photo
